How To Print

Before you print your logbook, it's a good idea to verify that your aircraft models are correctly configured. Many logbook columns rely on aircraft model properties, such as Category/Class or Multi-engine. To review and update your aircraft, go to More > Models (iOS), or ≡ > Aircraft models (Android).

When you're ready to print, open the More tab (iOS) or tap the ≡ icon (Android) and select Printing & Reports.

Next, select the type of logbook or report. Smart Logbook provides 5 logbook formats and 1 report. Each logbook page is printed across two sheets of paper in landscape orientation, like a traditional logbook. Each page includes rows for carry-forward, current page, and cumulative totals, as well as a signature block.

After you choose a format, you can set various printing options. When you're ready, tap Print (iOS) or Create PDF (Android) in the top right of the screen.

Smart Logbook then generates the PDF file. On iOS, you'll see a preview in the app. Tap the share icon to send or save the PDF. On Android, you'll see a popup with options to either Open the file (with a PDF viewer app) or Send it elsewhere (e.g. to a service like Dropbox, or to yourself as an email attachment).

Printing Options

You can customize the appearance and contents of your printed logbook with the following options.

Page Size

Rows Per Page

Title Page

Adds a title page with your name and (optionally) your license number and/or address.

Page Numbers

Adds page numbers at the bottom of each page.

Print Side

This option makes it possible to print your logbook on both sides of each sheet of paper, like a book.

When printed, each page of your logbook requires two sheets of paper: one for the columns on the left side (date, aircraft, crew members, etc.) and another for columns on the right (usually flight totals and remarks). With the default options, the left and right pages are both included in one PDF, in alternating order: L-R-L-R-L-R. The book/binder option works by printing the left and right pages separately, in two different PDF files: L-L-L and R-R-R.

Start with the Left Pages option selected. Generate and print a PDF. Then take the printed stack of pages out of the printer, turn it over, and insert it back into the printer. Switch to the Right Pages option and print the second PDF (on the back of each left-side page). Now you can mount your printed logbook in a binder and flip through the pages just like a traditional logbook.

Logbook Solutions is a good supplier of quality paper and binders that can make your Smart Logbook printouts look their best.

Filter

Use this to include only flights/entries matching some criteria (e.g. flights within a particular date range).

Infer Durations

Many logbooks have columns for flight time that falls into multiple categories. For example, the Transport Canada logbook has a column for "Single-Engine Day PIC" time. This column is populated when a flight in a single-engine aircraft contains a duration that is both Day and Pilot in Command.

Typically, when logging flights it's convenient to log each duration separately. For example, a flight might have 1.0 PIC hours and 0.7 Day hours. You (as a pilot) can easily infer that the flight has 0.7 hours of Day PIC time. Smart Logbook will do the same, if the Infer Durations option is enabled. It assumes that the value of a "combination" duration (e.g. Day PIC) is equal to the lesser of the two durations that are combined (e.g. Day and PIC).

Occasionally, you may need to override this behavior. In this case, you can log combination durations manually and Smart Logbook will use them instead. To do so, tap Add duration in the Durations section of a flight and select Add Combination Field at the bottom of the list (on Android, you'll need to select New duration field first). Then, select the two duration fields and tap New combination field (iOS) or OK (Android). Now, you can add that field to your flight durations and set its value directly. One case where you always need to add combination durations is when adding carry-forward totals for previous experience.

Print Formats

Jeppesen Basic Logbook

Sample

This format is great for student pilots and casual/recreational flyers. It features a large remarks column and includes columns for different aircraft category/class totals (ASEL, AMEL, etc).

Jeppesen Professional Logbook

Sample

This is similar to the Jeppesen Basic format, but has separate columns for day vs. night takeoffs and landings, and includes a column for the type of instrument approach(es) performed.

Form 8710-1 / IACRA Report

Sample

This report provides totals needed when applying for a new certificate or rating from the FAA, and is designed to match the Record of Pilot Time section of the Form 8710-1. The same totals are used by the online IACRA system.

All totals in the 8710-1/IACRA report are categorized by the aircraft category or simulator type. If any of your flights reference an aircraft model that doesn't have its Category set (or a simulator without its Simulator type set), that flight's durations won't be included in the report (Smart Logbook warns when this occurs).

Many columns in the 8710-1/IACRA report are derived from multiple duration types, e.g. "Cross Country Solo" and "Night Instruction Received". These values can be inferred automatically if the Infer Durations option is set.

Cross country time can only be included on the 8710-1/IACRA if it meets the requirements for flight distance (which vary based on aircraft type). Smart Logbook can usually determine which flights meet these requirements and calculate your cross country totals automatically, if the Filter XC setting is enabled.

Sometimes, however, Smart Logbook can't automatically calculate qualifying cross country time. For example, if a flight's route includes an airport that is not in our airport database, it can't determine the distance. Also, the app can't filter cross country time in carry-forward totals entries. Smart Logbook will warn if you try to print the 8710-1/IACRA report and your qualifying cross country time can't be automatically calculated.

If this happens you can still specify the qualifying cross country time manually, by adding the "Cross Country (8710-1)" duration. However, that duration field is not enabled by default. To use it, open the More tab (iOS) or tap ≡ (Android), and select Settings, then Configure Flight Fields. Tap Durations (and on Android, tap the arrow and click Configure duration fields). On the next screen (Duration Fields), enable the "Cross Country (8710-1)" field. On iOS, you'll need to tap Edit at top right, check the box next to the field, and then tap Done. On Android, find the field and enable it with the switch on the right. Now, add that field to your flight or carry-forward totals entry, and set its value appropriately (zero if the flight doesn't meet distance requirements).

If you turn the Filter XC setting off, all cross country time will be included in the 8710-1/IACRA report.

Fixing Problems

If you have trouble generating a printout, or if your printout does not have the values you expect, check for a solution below.

Some columns are empty

If one or more columns in your logbook are empty (but shouldn't be), the most likely reason is that the aircraft or crew members associated with the flight are missing or incomplete.

Several formats include columns whose values are inferred from the aircraft model associated with the flight. If the aircraft model's relevant property is not set, that column will remain empty. To check or update your aircraft models, tap the ≡ icon on the main screen and select Aircraft models. Select a model to review its properties and make changes if necessary.

Logbook ColumnsDepends on aircraft model property
Aircraft Category / Class (ASEL, AMEL, etc) Category, Class
Single-Engine, Multi-Engine Multi-engine
Engines # engines (Multi-engine must be set first)
Single-Pilot, Multi-Pilot Multi-pilot

Some formats also include columns for crew member names. These names come from the Crew members section of each flight, so check those fields if the column is empty. Note that you'll need to add yourself as a crew member in the appropriate position (pilot, copilot, etc) for your name to appear in a crew member column in the printout.

Can't open the generated PDF

To open your generated logbook file on an Android phone, you'll need a PDF viewer app installed. We recommend the Google PDF Viewer.

If a particular PDF app is unable to open the logbook file, try installing a different PDF app from the Google Play Store. The new app will appear as an option when you tap Open after generating a printout.

Can't send the generated PDF

When you tap the share icon (iOS) or the Send button (Android) after generating a printout, Smart Logbook displays a list of potential actions and destinations. For example, AirDrop (iOS), Print, and apps like Mail or Google Drive. After you select the appropriate option, the PDF will be sent to and handled by whichever app you chose.

If you're having trouble sending your PDF to a particular app, or the app you want to use does not appear in the list of options, just let us know.
